IMPACT OF GONG’S MOBILISATION TECHNIQUE ON PAIN AND FUNCTIONAL DISABILITY IN ADHESIVE CAPSULITIS PATIENTS

ABSTRACT
Background: Adhesive capsulitis is a common shoulder disorder characterized by pain, progressive stiffness, and restriction of both active and passive movements. These symptoms often lead to difficulty in performing daily activities and reduced quality of life, especially in middle-aged individuals. Gong’s mobilization is a manual therapy technique that combines joint distraction with active movement and may help in decreasing capsular tightness and pain. Methodology: This case report included a 50-year-old female patient diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. Baseline assessment of pain and functional disability was performed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI). The patient underwent a five sessions per week for four-week Physiotherapy intervention program consisting of Gong’s mobilization along with a structured exercise program. The exercise protocol included range-of-motion exercises, capsular stretching, strengthening of shoulder and scapular muscles, and functional task-oriented activities. Outcome measures were assessed pre and post intervention. Results: After completion of the four-week intervention program, the patient demonstrated a significant reduction in shoulder pain and improvement in functional ability. The NPRS score decreased from 7/10 to 2/10 after treatment. Functional disability, as measured by SPADI, improved markedly, with scores reducing from 68% pre-intervention to 24% post-intervention. Improvements were also observed in shoulder range of motion and muscle strength, indicating better functional use of the affected upper limb. Conclusion: The findings of this case report suggest that Gong’s mobilization performed, when combined with a structured Physiotherapy exercise program, was effective in reducing pain and improving functional disability in patients with adhesive capsulitis. However, limited clinical reports are available on the application of Gong’s mobilization for improving pain and functional disability.
